I'm not sure how getting a mammogram became so scary and why everyone assumes it hurts so bad. It's fairly quick and painless. It's actually pretty great considering it can save your life. Here are a few things I think you should know about mammograms.
It's really not that bad
Ok, so it's not a vacation, but it really isn't as bad as you've probably made it out to be in your head. Yes, it is awkward and uncomfortable, but personally seeing my gynecologist every year is more of a struggle than a mammogram. But maybe take some Tylenol before you go, just in case.
It won’t actually take very long
The mammogram process is pretty quick and easy. I was in and out within an hour each time.
Because I go to the same facility each time (more on that below) I've had the same tech each time. She has always been very kind and explains everything clearly. She will position you, then she will step away, the machine will squish your boob and then she will be back to reposition for another picture.
Do not wear deodorant or lotion under your arms
If you have somewhere to go afterwards, just bring some along and put it on afterwards, but don't put it on beforehand as they can cause a reading to be inaccurate.
You may get called back for more imaging
It can be scary to get that call, but it doesn't automatically mean anything is wrong. As with all technology, it isn't perfect. Maybe you sneezed or twitched during an image and it didn't turn out just right. Most of the time they just need another look, so do not panic!
It matters where you go
Research nearby facilities and once you find one you like, stick with it. Like I mentioned previously, I've only been to 1 facility. They did their best to make your brain think you were at the spa as opposed to marking something off your yearly check-up to-do list. Sure, you still have to get up close and personal with an X-ray machine, but the rest of the appointment can be quite spa-like.
Ask for a 3D mammogram
This is important. If your insurance allows (and honestly, even if it doesn't) I would opt for the 3D mammogram. Technology is always advancing and the 3D provides the doctor a clearer picture of your breasts, reducing that panic-inducing call back and increasing the chances of finding any lurking cancer that could be hiding. Because trust me, you want to find it early.
Do it for your peace of mind
"I don't want to know" is what someone said to me when I asked why they hadn't scheduled their mammogram yet. Guess what, if you don't know, then your doctors don't know and they can't treat something they don't know exists. Breast cancer has a high success rate, if it's caught early enough. Don't wait until you feel something and don't live in the fear of the unknown. Just do it!
